Recommended Tire pressures for a Alfa Romeo Alfasud

Some people have concerns about the accuracy of historic tire pressure recommendations in light of modern rubber compounds, safety standards, and tire manufacturing methods. To shed light on this matter, we reached out to our contact at Pirelli, who provided us with the following insights:

"Our philosophy is to reproduce as closely as possible the original tire characteristics using new processes and materials thus to maintain the handling of the vehicle the same. This means, yes we maintain the original handbook pressures.”

Alfa Romeo Alfasud Tires

The Alfa Romeo Alfasud was produced from 1971 to 1989 and had a wide variety of tire options due to its range of variants. In 1971, the first 1.2L Alfasud model was originally equipped with 145 R13 tires.

Up to 1977, the Alfasud Ti, SE, and 5m variants were fitted with 145 R13 tires. The Alfasud 1200 model from 1975 to 1976 also featured 145 R13 tires. Additionally, the 1977 Alfasud 1200, N, L, and Ti models were equipped with 145 R13 tires. From 1983 onwards, the Alfasud 1.3, 1.5, and Ti variants were fitted with the same 145 R13 tires. In this size we recommend either the 145HR13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 or the 145 R13 Michelin XAS FF.

The 1977 Alfasud Ti, SE, and 5m models featured 165/70 R13 tires. In 1978, the Alfasud 5m, 1200Ti, 1300Ti, and Sprint models were also fitted with 165/70 R13 tires. The 1984-1985 Alfasud Ti, SE, and 5m variants maintained the use of 165/70 R13 tires.

The Alfasud Estate (Giardinetta) produced from 1975 to 1978 and the Alfasud Estate from 1978 to 1981 (following the face-lift) were equipped with 155 R13 or 165/70 R13 tires. The 155 R13 size is particularly well-suited for Estate models due to its height and full (80%) profile, which enhances load-bearing capacity and driving comfort, both of which are desirable attributes for estate cars. In this size the ideal Alfasud tire is the 155R13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67. The 155 HR 13 Michelin XAS FF is another excellent tire, well suited to the Alfasud.

During the period of 1981-1982, the Alfasud 1.3 and 1.5 models, as well as the Alfasud TI, TIS, and TIS Veloce variants, were equipped with 165/70 R13 tires. The Alfasud Sprint Veloce model from 1981 to 1983 featured 165-70 13 tires. Additionally, from 1981 onwards, the Alfasud 1.3 (84cv) Ti and Sprint models were fitted with 165/70 R13 tires.

From in 1981, the Alfasud 1.3 (68cv) and 1.5 (84cv) models had various tire options, including 145 R13, 165/70 R13, or 190/55R340. Similarly, the Alfasud 1.5 (94cv) Ti and 1.5 (94cv) Sprint variants were equipped with 190/55R340 tires. The Alfasud 1.5 Sprint (94cv) and 1.5Ti (105cv) models had 190/55R340 tires, as well as the option of 185/60R14 tires.

In the 185/60R14 size we recommend either the 185/60 VR 14 Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2. The only top quality period 190/55R340 tire to recommend is the 190/55 VR 340 Michelin TRX.

For more detailed information about tire options based on your Alfasud's specific year and subvariant, please refer to the fitment guides below.

Alfa Romeo Alfasud Innertubes

Alfasud cars were initially equipped with tube-type wheels. However, starting around 1980, most models transitioned to tubeless wheels. According to our fitment guides, after 1981, only the 1.2, Ti, SE, and 5m models continued to use tube-type wheels. Unless manufactured after 1980, Alfasud wheels require innertubes. It's important to note that tires with a profile below 70% (e.g. 190/55 R340) should not be fitted with innertubes.

The ideal innertube for 145 R13 tires is the Michelin 13CG Innertube, while the Michelin 13D is recommended for 155 R13 tires. For 165/70 R13 tires, the best choice is the Michelin 13E innertube.

Alfa Romeo Alfasud History

The Alfa Romeo Alfasud, a compact Italian car, was produced by Alfa Romeo from 1971 to 1989 and remains one of their most successful 20th-century models. It earned its name, Alfa Sud (Alfa South), as it was manufactured at a new facility in Pomigliano d'Arco, southern Italy.

Debuting at the Turin Motor Show in 1971, the Alfasud quickly garnered praise for its striking design and exceptional handling. Initially available as a four-door sedan, it featured a 1,186 cc Flat-4 engine. Although it lacked a hatchback initially, a sportier two-door TI variant was introduced in late 1973.

In 1974, Alfa Romeo introduced the Alfasud SE, a more luxurious version, which was later replaced by the 'L' (Lusso) model in 1975. The Lusso model gave way to the '5M' model in 1976, becoming the first four-door Alfasud with a five-speed transmission. Additionally, a three-door variant called the Giardinetta was launched in 1975.

The sporty Alfasud Sprint made its appearance in 1976, featuring a hatchback design, a 75-hp engine, and a five-speed transmission. The engine from the Sprint was later used in regular Alfasud models, resulting in the 1300 TI variants, while the five-speed gearbox was adopted by the basic Alfasuds, creating the 5M (5 Marce) model.

Over time, a 1,490 cc engine with 85 horsepower became available for all body types. By the end of its production, the engine had been enhanced to produce 105 horsepower for the Green Cloverleaf variant.

Despite its impressive engineering, the Alfasud gained a negative reputation for rust, potentially due to the quality of steel obtained from the Soviet Union and the storage conditions of the car bodies. Additionally, the vehicle had a tendency to overheat in tropical climates.

Nevertheless, the Alfasud is recognized as a significant milestone in Alfa Romeo's history, demonstrating the brand's commitment to innovation and contributing to its reputation for crafting sporty and captivating cars.
