Citroen Ami Tires
The Citroen Ami was developed during the era when Citroen was owned by Michelin. In this time Michelin developed their tires for optimal use with specific Citroen vehicles. The first radial tire; the Michelin X and was specifically designed for the 2CV, making the pairing of car and tire uniquely harmonious. The Citroen Ami is essentially a 2CV under the bonnet, so the 125 SR 15 Michelin X is the ideal tire for the Citroen Ami.
Our period fitment guides below have some contradictions as to the original equipment tire for the various Ami models. The Ami 6 estate, the Ami 8 Estate, and the Ami Super may have been released on 135 - 15 according to the fitment guides. It is possible that 135 - 15 was simply listed as an alternate size. In this size the 135 - 15 Michelin ZX is the only option for the Ami, no other tire in this size is so closely related to the Ami.
Citroen Ami Alternative Tires
Today any model of Ami can fit either a 125 - 15 or a 135 - 15, though the 135 - 15 is generally utilised more on the larger estate models. There is also a 135 SR 15 Michelin X M+S, an off-road mud and snow tire available for off-roading.
Our Dunlop guides suggest that Certain Estate models may have fitted 155/ 70 15 tires, but it is likely that this is simply offered as an alternative tire. As the Ami is largely based on the Mechanicals of the 2CV, fitting a 155/70 15 is extreme, that much tire is too much for the car.
Some classic car fitment guides will offer the tires in a millimetric size (135 - 380) rather than in inches (135 - 15). 380mm is equal to 14.96", so 15" will fit fine.

Citroen Ami Whitewall Tires
If you desire whitewall tires the 125 SR 15 Michelin X Whitewall is a high quality period tire option that features a whitewall design. There is not currently a quality radial in the 135 R15 size with a whitewall. If money is no object then Michelin can add a whitewall to any of their tires, but we would recommend the 125 SR 15 Michelin X Whitewall, as the cost of adding a whitewall exceeds £150 per tire!
Citroen Ami Innertubes
Our period fitment guides suggest that by 1972 (and quite possibly earlier than that), the Citroen Ami was released on wheels capable of running tubeless tires. If your Ami is manufactured after 1972 your wheels should feature the safety rib that consitutes a tubeless tire and innertubes are not essential, providing that your tires are also tubeless in design. Some owners prefer to fit innertubes, and if you want innertubes for 125 R15 and 135 R15 tires the Michelin 15CB is the ideal tube.

Citroen Ami History
The Citroën Ami, produced by the French automaker Citroën from 1961 to 1978, was a compact car that aimed to bridge the gap between the affordable 2CV and the more upscale DS model. It was designed to provide practicality, comfort, and economy to meet the needs of the post-war European market. The development of the Citroën Ami began in the late 1950s as a response to the increasing demand for small and economical family cars. The design team, led by Flaminio Bertoni, sought to create a vehicle that was both functional and aesthetically distinctive. The result was a car with a unique and unconventional appearance characterized by its tall, boxy shape, large windows, and minimalist design. The Citroën Ami featured a front-wheel-drive layout and utilized the same platform as the Citroën 2CV. It was powered by various engines throughout its production years, including the air-cooled flat-twin engines ranging from 425cc to 602cc. These engines, coupled with lightweight construction, provided adequate performance and excellent fuel efficiency.

1969 Citroën Ami 8
Over the course of its production, the Citroën Ami underwent several model changes and updates. The initial model, known as the Ami 6, was introduced in 1961. It featured a distinctive reverse-raked rear window, which became one of its signature design elements. In 1969, the Ami 8 was introduced, featuring a more modern and conventional styling compared to its predecessor. The Ami 8 had a restyled front end, improved interior, and wider track, enhancing stability and handling.
Throughout its production, the Citroen Ami underwent significant updates and improvements, enhancing safety, interior features, and the overall driving experience. These included the introduction of improved seat belts, strengthened body structures, and upgraded braking systems for enhanced safety. Interior refinements focused on increased comfort and convenience with improvements in seating materials, dashboard layout, and cabin ergonomics.
The Citroën Ami made a notable impact in motorsport, particularly in endurance racing events such as the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, where it demonstrated its endurance and reliability on the track. Beyond its success in motorsport, the Citroën Ami played a significant role in the automotive landscape of its era. It gained popularity thanks to its affordable price, practicality, and distinctive design. Families and urban commuters were drawn to the Ami for its spacious interior, comfortable ride, and fuel efficiency.
Unfortunately, production of the Citroën Ami came to an end in 1978, concluding its successful run. Nevertheless, the Ami left a lasting legacy as a practical, economical, and uniquely styled vehicle that catered to a specific market segment. With its iconic French aesthetic, the Citroën Ami continues to hold a special place in the automotive industry, capturing the hearts of enthusiasts and collectors as a timeless classic car.

Citroen Tire Pressure & Fitment Guides
With contemporary rubber compounds, safety standards, and tire manufacturing methods, some worry that historic tire pressure recommendations are no longer accurate. We spoke to our friend at Pirelli who told us the following:
"Our philosophy is to reproduce as closely as possible the original tyre characteristics using new processes and materials thus to maintain the handling of the vehicle the same. This means, yes we maintain the original handbook pressures.”
