Recommended Tire pressures for a Lamborghini Espada

Given the advancements in rubber compounds, safety regulations, and tire manufacturing techniques, there have been concerns regarding the reliability of historical tire pressure recommendations. To address these uncertainties, we sought expert insights on the matter from our contact at Pirelli, who shared the following information with us.

"Our philosophy is to reproduce as closely as possible the original tire characteristics using new processes and materials thus to maintain the handling of the vehicle the same. This means, yes we maintain the original handbook pressures.”

To explore tire fitment manuals from leading tire manufacturers of that time period, we invite you to browse through our curated collection of Tire Fitment Guides.

The first Espada came fitted with 7” wide wheels and fitted 205 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN72. The PIRELLI CINTURATO CN72 was released in 1964, intended for the performance cars of the day. This tire was the original equipment tire on not just the Espada, but also the Lamborghini Miura and Ferrari 330 GT.

The later series 3 Espada had power steering to accommodate wider wheels that fitted wider lower profile 215/70 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN12 tires. The PIRELLI CINTURATO CN12 was developed in 1971 for performance cars, offering exceptional levels of grip, whilst remaining a comfortable drive. This tire is ideally suited to the Espada, and can be fitted to all models.

Lamborghini Espada Alternative Tires

The only alternative tire we would recommend for the Espada is the 215/70VR15 Michelin XWX, a high quality sporting road tire that had the highest speed rating in its day. Any other tire would either be too modern for the 1960-70s Espada chassis, or not strong enough to handle the speeds and forces the Espada generates, in short a classic sports car only operates properly on classic sports car tires.

Lamborghini Espada Innertubes

Our period fitment guides suggest that the Espada was released on tube-type wheels throughout production, innertubes are required for these wheels. In our experience Michlin innertubes stand well above the rest in terms of quality. Whenever available we recommend michelin tubes over any others. The Michelin 15/17H will be the best fitting innertube for these tires.

Lamborghini Espada History

Lamborghini, the esteemed Italian luxury car manufacturer founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini in 1963, set out to compete with renowned brands like Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes. Drawing inspiration from the Lamborghini Marzal, the Espada emerged as a four-seat model that epitomized Lamborghini's dedication to innovation and performance.

Derived from the Spanish word for "sword," the name "Espada" symbolized the vehicle's powerful and graceful nature, reminiscent of the Toreros' bullfighting swords. During its ten-year production span, the Lamborghini Espada underwent significant interior design changes, while exterior modifications remained relatively minor.

Unveiled at the 1968 Geneva Auto Show, the Lamborghini Espada marked a pivotal moment for the brand, as Ferruccio Lamborghini aimed to expand their sports car lineup with a true four-seater model. With its spacious cabin, generous trunk space, and a robust V12 engine, the Espada embodied the essence of Italian Gran Turismo, presenting an ideal luxurious vehicle for grand touring.

The Lamborghini Espada boasted a monocoque steel body, fully independent suspension, and advanced features such as double wishbones, coil springs, hydraulic shock absorbers, and anti-roll bars, setting new benchmarks in its era. Its V12 engine, equipped with six Weber side-draft carburetors and 24 valves controlled by two chain-driven overhead camshafts per bank, exemplified Lamborghini's commitment to engineering excellence. The gearbox was cleverly mounted within the engine block, further enhancing the vehicle's performance capabilities.

The Espada series encompassed three distinct iterations: the first series (1968 to 1970), the second series (1970 to 1972), and the third series (1972 to 1978). Differentiating factors among the series mainly involved dashboard changes and other minor details. The initial launch at the 1968 Geneva Motor Show showcased a unique dashboard design influenced by the Marzal concept car, with rear lights sourced from the Fiat 124 Sport Coupe, augmenting its distinctive appearance.

In 1970, Lamborghini introduced the second-generation Espada at the Brussels Motor Show, incorporating significant cabin enhancements such as a new central console and redesigned dashboard. Notable improvements included Girling disc brakes and an optional power steering system. Additionally, a power increase from 325hp to 350hp was achieved in 1970 through higher compression, further elevating the Espada's performance capabilities.

The third and final generation of the Lamborghini Espada featured newly designed 5-hub wheels, instantly recognizable and adding a unique aesthetic appeal.

With a production total of 1,227 units meticulously manufactured at the assembly plant in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy, the Lamborghini Espada solidified its position as the brand's best-selling model from 1968 to 1978, serving as a testament to its enduring appeal and undeniable popularity.

The Lamborghini Espada's legacy in the world of luxury sports cars is indisputable. As Lamborghini's flagship model for a decade, the Espada captivated automotive enthusiasts with its distinctive design, powerful performance, and exceptional craftsmanship. Its spacious four-seat configuration, combined with the potent V12 engine and advanced features, truly embodied the spirit of Italian Gran Turismo. The enduring popularity of the Lamborghini Espada and its significant place in the brand's history solidify its status as an icon of automotive excellence, representing Lamborghini's unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation and luxury.
