Porsche 914 Tires
The early 1.7 Porsche 914 was fitted with 155R15 tires, and at the time, it could have been equipped with various tire brands including Seperite, Dunlop SP57 155 HR 15, 155 HR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67, or Michelin XAS FF 155 HR 15.

Porsche 914/6 Tires
For the 911 engined, 6 cylinder 914/6 cars, the majority were equipped with 165R15 tires, and the best options currently available are 165 VR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 N and 165-15 Michelin XAS.
Some 914/6 vehicles were fitted with 14" wheels and higher tire sidewalls for increased comfort. In this case, the ideal tyre is the 185 HR 14 Michelin MXV-P.
Additionally, Pirelli offers the 175/70 WR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36, which would be an excellent choice for a Porsche 914.
It's important to note that the 155 R15, 165 R15, and 175/70 R15 tires are best suited for Michelin 15E innertubes. The 185 R14 tires should be mounted with Michelin 14F innertubes where applicable.
For those looking to race their Porsche 914 or 914/6, there is a great selection of Michelin TB Tyres as well as the PIRELLI P7 CORSA ™ Classic.

Porsche 914 Wider Tires
Expanding the footprint of a classic car's tire is a common desire, but it can alter the handling of the vehicle, sometimes negatively. However, if you want to increase the size of your Porsche 914 or 914/6 tires, choosing the Pirelli Cinturato CN36 will help minimize any negative consequences. This is because the bigger tire is designed to complement the classic Porsche chassis.
Additionally, you may also be interested in the rear 215/60 VR15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 N tires as a suitable option for your vehicle.
Porsche 914 Modern Tires
When installing wider, more modern tires, it's important to adjust the caster and camber angles of the chassis and reinforce the suspension to ensure the tire footprint stays in contact with the road. If these steps are not taken, the handling can become unstable and unpredictable.
It's best to avoid using modern tire carcasses such as 185/70R15, 195/65R15, or even wider tires on the front of a Porsche 914, as the handling can become more extreme. However, if you stick with the rounded profile of tires like the 185/70VR15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CN36 N or 185/70 VR 15 Michelin XWX, the handling will be heavier than with a 165R15 tire, but still controlled. On the other hand, modern tire carcasses can cause a sudden loss of grip.

While other tire options are available for the Porsche 914, they may not offer the same level of compatibility. For more information on the best tire options for your Porsche 914, consider reading an article from the German vintage automobile magazine "Autoblid-Klassic" which compares different tire options for classic Porsche vehicles.

Porsche 914 Racing Tires
If you're looking for competition-grade tires, the Michelin TB15 series and Pirelli P7 Corsa™ Classic are both excellent choices. Porsche used the Michelin TB15 series in the past and the Pirelli P7 Corsa is a popular option among racers. There are also road-friendly options available in the PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ P7 line. However, it's worth noting that modifying your Porsche 914 to accommodate wider tires can negatively impact its overall driving experience on the road. However depending on what race series you are entering, you may need to use Dunlop Racing Tires. Check your race regulations before purchasing.
It's also worth mentioning that Porsche offered 185R14 tires instead of 165R15 some 914/6 cars for both the improved comfort provided by the taller sidewall and the enhanced grip of the wider tire. By the time the 914 was introduced, Porsche was fitting 185/70VR15 tires to their 911s, but only installed them in the 914 or 914/6 upon request.
History of the Porsche 914
The late 1960s saw Volkswagen and Porsche in need of new models. Porsche was in search of a successor for their entry-level 912 while Volkswagen sought a new top-of-the-range sports coupe to replace the Karmann Ghia. With Porsche handling the majority of Volkswagen's development work, Volkswagen assigned the 914 project to Porsche as part of their agreement.
Ferdinand Piëch, Porsche's head of research and development, was put in charge of the project. Initially, the plan was to sell the vehicle with a flat four-cylinder engine as a Volkswagen and a flat six-cylinder engine as a Porsche. However, Porsche realized that having Volkswagen and Porsche models sharing the same body would be challenging for business in the American market and convinced Volkswagen to allow them to sell both versions as Porsches in North America. The first 914 prototype was unveiled on March 1, 1968.

Unfortunately, the death of Volkswagen's chairman, Heinz Nordhoff, on April 12, 1968, complicated matters. His successor, Kurt Lotz, had no connection to the Porsche family and the verbal agreement between Volkswagen and Porsche fell apart. According to Lotz, Volkswagen owned the rights to the model and saw no reason to share it with Porsche if they did not share the tooling costs. This decision resulted in the 914's pricing and marketing plan failing before production even started, leading to a significantly higher cost of the chassis.
The 914/6 ended up costing just slightly less than the 911T, Porsche's next lowest-priced car, which had a significant impact on sales. The 914-4, on the other hand, was Porsche's top seller and outsold the 911 by a significant margin, with over 118,000 cars sold worldwide.
