Renault 4 Tire Pressures
To find tires for your Renault 4 see our Renault 4 Tires page.
- The ideal Renault 4 tire pressures range from 18/30 PSI PSI depending on your car's model and tire size.
- To find the ideal tire pressures to match your car's year, model, and chosen tires follow the link to our Renault 4 Tire Pressure Guides.
- For Renault 4 tires, we recommend 145 R13 or 155 R13 tires, as the original sizes; 135-330 and 135-13 classic tires, are no longer manufactured.
- Our recommended Renault 4 145 R13 tire is the 145HR13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67.
- Our recommended Renault 4 155 R13 tire is the 155 R13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 or 155HR13 XAS.

Original Renault 4 Tires
The early Renault 4 originally fitted 135-330 tires. 330 mm is equal to 13". The French were late adopters of imperial tire measurements, continuing to use millimetric-sized tires into the 1970s, which can be somewhat perplexing.
The Renault 4 fitted 13" wheels, and 135 R330 tires are effectively identical to a 135R13 tire. (330mm = 12.9921").
Unfortunately, there is not currently a good classic 135 R13 tire. We would instead suggest moving up to the slightly larger 145 R13 tire size. 145 R13 tires are slightly wider, and have a slightly larger footprint, but the driving feel and handling will remain similar to the original size.
A set of 145HR13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 is the best tire in this size, ideal for a Renault 4, 4L, 4TL, and 4 GTL (also called R4, R4L, R4TL, and R4 GTL).
Renault 4 Radial Tires
As early as 1968, and potentially even before (due to our fitment guides not encompassing every model year), certain Renault 4 models were originally equipped with 145 R13 radial tires. For these vehicles, the 145 R13 Cinturato CA67 is an ideal choice.
The most recent fitment data we have indicates that the 1989 Renault 4 GTL (Clan) also used 145 R13 tires. This consistency in tire size suggests that the 145 R13 CA67 tire is compatible with all Renault 4 models, assuming they are fitted with their original wheels.

Renault 4 Wider Tires
Some Renault 4 owners may have fitted after-market 155 R13 tires, either due to the scarcity of the original 145 R13 tires, or a preference for wider tires than the standard specification suggests.
If you're considering 155 R13 tires, the 155 R13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 is an excellent tire for the Renault 4, offering light steering and excellent, progressive handling. Another standout tire in this size is the 155 HR 13 Michelin XAS FF, an asymmetric tire designed by Michelin in 1965.
Renault 4 Innertubes
Our historic fitment guides suggest that in 1983 some models transitioned to tubeless wheels. Innertubes are not required for these tires providing that your wheels are in good condition. All models before 1983 (and some after) fitted tube-type wheels and therefore need innertubes.
The ideal innertube for 145 R13 tires is the Michelin 13CG innertube. The Michelin 13D is the ideal innertube for 155 R13 tires.

Renault 4 History
The Renault 4, known as the R4 or 'Quatrelle' in its native French, is a compact economy car produced by the Renault from 1961 to 1992, (with production extending for an additional two years exclusively in Slovenia). The Renault 4 is the world's first mass-produced hatchback car, as well as Renault's first front-wheel-drive family car. The R4 was introduced as the French economy grew and car ownership was on the rise in France. The R4 quickly became a symbol of mobility and freedom for the masses.
Designed in direct response to the 1948 Citroën 2CV, the Renault 4 sought to surpass its older cousin by creating a more modern, refined, and versatile all-round vehicle. It featured a sturdy structural platform with a separate body. It had front-wheel drive, and a long-travel fully independent suspension, coupled with rack and pinion steering.
The simplicity of its body design, minimal equipment, and the inclusion of a large cargo area with easily removable deckchair seats earned the R4 its reputation for practicality. Many period R4 adverts show the boot filled with large amounts of luggage, children, animals, or twenty-somethings with beach gear, often with a picnic nearby (of course).
The Renault 4 was powered by a larger, four-cylinder, water-cooled engine with a sealed cooling system, which provided enhanced refinement and performance compared to the then-aged 2CV. Its suspension system utilised torsion bars, which didn't require regular maintenance, and the car's boxy, full-width body significantly increased the available space inside the car.

The Renault 4's versatility was a key aspect of its design, allowing it to be employed in a broad spectrum of uses; including urban commuting, family transportation, and navigating rugged rural roads. The image to the right shows the R4 used as a farmer's vehicle transporting pigs! This versatility was further demonstrated with its departure from the rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout of its predecessor, the Renault 4CV.
The Renault 4 has a front-wheel-drive configuration that improves both interior space and handling. The car's suspension system was notably innovative for its time, featuring independent suspension on all four wheels, contributing to its reputation for comfort on uneven terrain.
One of the Renault 4's most memorable design elements was its 'umbrella handle' gear lever, protruding from the dashboard rather than the floor like most cars of the day. Throughout its production run, the Renault 4 was available in various special editions and configurations, including the popular Renault 4L, the more luxurious Renault 4TL, the soft-top Renault 4 'Plein Air', and the rugged Renault 4 Sinpar four-wheel drive edition. This was a collaboration with French company Sinpar who specialised in 4WD conversions.
The simple design has lent the Renault 4 to a large number of aftermarket conversions, including doorless off-road buggies, camper conversions, art cars, mobile libraries, and even one or two amphibious cars!
By February 1, 1966, less than five years after its launch, the first million Renault 4 cars had been produced, ultimately leading to over eight million units being manufactured in total by the end of production in 1992. This remarkable achievement not only underscored the Renault 4's commercial success but also cemented its legacy as a beloved and influential vehicle in automotive history. Today the R4 is a desirable classic, with R4 obsessives all over the world.

Renault 4 Tire Pressure & Fitment Guides
As rubber compounds, safety standards, and tire manufacturing methods have evolved over time, questions have arisen regarding the relevance of historical tire pressure recommendations. This question was addressed in a recent conversation with a colleague at Pirelli.
"Our philosophy is to reproduce as closely as possible the original tire characteristics using new processes and materials thus to maintain the handling of the vehicle the same. This means, yes we maintain the original handbook pressures.”
