Saab 96 Tires
Early Saab 96 models came fitted with 5.20-15 crossply tires. Today this size is very uncommon, we do not stock any tires in this size and would suggest fitting radial tires. If you are desperate for crossply tires the 5.50 x 15 Excelsior could be fitted.
A radial equivalent size to 5.20- 15 is 155 R15 which allows for the fitment of a range of quality classic radial tires.
The 155 HR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 is an early sports car radial tire. It is designed to provide progressive and sporty handling, allowing it to maintain grip while cornering. The tire is specifically engineered to roll onto its shoulders during a corner, ensuring maximum grip instead of sliding when reaching the limit. It is believed to be the original equipment tire for many Saab 96 cars, and is one of our top recommendations.
Developed in 1965, the 155HR15 Michelin XAS FF is an excellent period tire. Its asymmetrical design offers outstanding handling capabilities. The XAS tire provides exceptional road holding during bends and greatly improves directional stability. Additionally, its asymmetrical design aids in straight-line travel on modern high-speed motorways, and is one of our top recommendations.
Saab 96 Alternative Tires
The 155 TR 15 Michelin X is known as the first-ever radial tire released. It gained popularity for its longevity and was fitted on cars like the 2cv until the 1980s. While not as impressive in performance as the CA67 or XAS, this tire is well suited for less sporting drivers. It offers good value and performance.
All of these tires are manufactured using modern rubber compounds while retaining the original designs. This combination ensures that the tires are tailored to the chassis & physics of classic cars, unlike any modern tire, whilst incorporating cutting-edge tire and rubber technology. This results in the best possible performance, handling characteristics, safety, and driving experience on a classic car like the Saab 96.

Saab 96 Whitewall Tires
If you desire whitewall tires the 155 HR 15 Galaxy Whitewall is an tire option that features a whitewall design. However, it is not as suitable for the Saab 96 due to its more modern carcass construction and tread. If you prioritize having a whitewall and are less concerned about achieving the nicest handling or historical authenticity, this tire is a good option.
Saab 96 Innertubes
Our historical fitment guides provide some information about the Saab 96 wheels, but they are not comprehensive enough to offer a complete timeline. The Saab 96 V4 edition was introduced in 1967. According to the 1972 Michelin and Pirelli guides, which are our earliest wheel fitment references for this car, Saab 96 V4 models were equipped with tubeless wheels.
The earlier Saab 96 models are listed as fitting tube-type wheels throughout their production until they were completely replaced by the V4 model by 1968. For owners of 1967-1971 V4 models, it is uncertain whether the wheels are tube-type or tubeless. To determine the type of wheels on your vehicle, it is necessary to physically inspect them.
At Longstone, we highly recommend Michelin Innertubes whenever they are available. Through our experience, we have found them to consistently exhibit the highest quality compared to other brands. The ideal tube for 155 R15 and 550 - 15 tires is the Michelin 15E innertube.

Saab 96 History
The Saab 96 holds a significant place in Swedish automotive history as an iconic and beloved car produced by Saab Automobile. Introduced in 1960, the Saab 96 quickly gained popularity and became one of Saab's most successful models.
The design of the Saab 96 was distinctive, characterized by its aerodynamic shape, wraparound windshield, and "bullnose" front end. It featured a compact size and front-wheel drive, which contributed to its excellent handling and traction.
In its early years, the Saab 96 was powered by a two-stroke, three-cylinder engine, known for its unique sound and economical performance. This engine provided spirited acceleration and made the Saab 96 a lively car to drive. However, as emissions regulations tightened, Saab introduced the Saab 96 V4 variant in 1967, which featured a Ford-sourced 1.5-liter V4 engine. The transition to a four-stroke engine not only improved emissions but also enhanced the car's refinement and power delivery.

Famous rallying names such as Simo Lampinen, Per Eklund, Pat Moss-Carlsson, Tom Trana, Stig Blomqvist and Carl Orrenius have also been connected with the Saab 96.
Throughout its production, the Saab 96 underwent significant updates and improvements, enhancing safety, interior features, and the overall driving experience. These included the introduction of improved seat belts, strengthened body structures, and upgraded braking systems for enhanced safety. Interior refinements focused on increased comfort and convenience with improvements in seating materials, dashboard layout, and cabin ergonomics.
Technical advancements improved performance and reliability through upgrades to the suspension system, engine components, and drivetrain. The heating and ventilation systems were also enhanced for optimal comfort, while efforts to reduce cabin noise levels provided a quieter and more refined driving experience.
After two decades of production, the Saab 96 bid farewell in 1980, leaving behind a remarkable legacy. It remains an enduring symbol of Saab's engineering innovation, distinctive design, and motorsport achievements. The Saab 96 continues to be cherished by collectors, enthusiasts, and fans of classic cars worldwide, standing as a testament to the unique spirit and legacy of Saab Automobile.

Saab Tire Pressure & Fitment Guides
With contemporary rubber compounds, safety standards, and tire manufacturing methods, some worry that historic tire pressure recommendations are no longer accurate. We spoke to our friend at Pirelli who told us the following:
"Our philosophy is to reproduce as closely as possible the original tyre characteristics using new processes and materials thus to maintain the handling of the vehicle the same. This means, yes we maintain the original handbook pressures.”
