Triumph Herald Tires

The original Triumph Herald tires were 5.20 - 13 crossply tires. However, the only crossply tire available in this size is the 5.20 x 13 Camac, which falls under the budget category. For a better option, we suggest switching to a radial tire.

The original Triumph Herald Estate tires were 5.60 - 13 crossply tires. Again only the 5.60 x 13 Camac is made in this size, and we would instead suggest fitting radial tires.

Radial tires are an upgrade from crossply tires, especially for high-speed modern roads. Crossply tires tend to wander at high speeds, but fitting good quality period radial tires will significantly reduce this issue.

The ideal radial equivalent size to 5.20-13 is 145 R13. Our top recommendation for a Triumph Herald, Herald 12/50, or Herald 13/60 radial tire is the 145HR13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67, the first ever period classic car tire in the size 145 R13. The 145R13 Michelin XAS FF is also an excellent period tire in the size.

For Herald Estate tires the radial equivalent size is 155 R13. In this size Longstone highly recommends the 155R13 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 or the 155 HR 13 Michelin XAS FF. These tires are both high quality, period correct classic tires, offering brilliant road holding and handling qualities. Either tire would be an excellent choice for your Triumph Herald Estate.

Triumph Herald Innertubes

Our period fitment guides present conflicting information regarding the wheel type of the Herald (tube-type or tubeless). The Pirelli and Dunlop Guides suggest tubeless wheels, while our Michelin Guides suggest tube-type wheels.

However, considering the small size of the wheel, we believe it is more likely a tube-type wheel. These wheels are probably too narrow to have the safety rib on the inside that constitutes a tubeless wheel. Some individuals may still choose to run these wheels tubeless, similar to the Citroen 2CV, but for your Herald, we recommend using innertubes, even if you fit tubeless tires.

The ideal innertube for 5.20-13 and 145 R13 tires is the Michelin 13CG innertube. For 155 R13 Tires, the Michelin 13D innertube is the best option.

Triumph Herald Whitewall Tires

In period many Herald's were seen sporting whitewall tires. If budget is not a concern, we have the option to add a whitewall to any of Michelin or Pirelli's tires. However, it's important to note that the cost of adding a whitewall is expensive. Budget whitewall tires are usually available but stocks vary, contact us on +44 (0) 1302 711 123 to enquire about a wallet-friendly whitewall.

Triumph Herald History

The Triumph Herald, introduced in 1959, differed significantly from its predecessor, the Standard Ten model. Its design, with a separate chassis and bodywork styled by Michelotti of Italy, gained attention. The Herald's bolt-on body panels allowed for various models without significant costs, making it a versatile option for buyers. One of the Herald's features was its tiny turning circle of 25 feet, contributing to maneuverability. Additionally, the independent rear suspension system received praise and skepticism for its handling abilities.

Giovanni Michelotti designed the Herald's two-door saloon with impressive visibility. The car's "razor-edge" look was embraced by car manufacturers during that period. The Herald lineup offered options like the saloon, coupé, convertible, estate, and van versions, all sharing a common chassis with interchangeable panels.

Depending on the model, the dashboard design varied, with the saloon featuring a large speedometer and an optional temperature gauge, while the coupé had additional gauges for fuel and temperature, along with a lockable glovebox.

During the 1960s, Standard-Triumph faced financial challenges, leading to a takeover by Leyland Motors Ltd in 1961. This move brought new resources, culminating in the introduction of the Herald 1200 model. The Herald 1200 featured an 1147 cc engine, improved seating, and a laminated wooden dashboard. Despite competition from other models, the Herald saw increased sales.

Throughout its production, the Herald had variations like the sportier Herald 12/50 model, available from 1963 to 1967. The Herald 12/50 had a tuned engine with a claimed 51 bhp, standard front disc brakes, and a sliding vinyl-fabric sunroof by Webasto.

Further updates to the Herald range came in October 1967 with the launch of the Herald 13/60 at the London Motor Show. This updated version was available as a saloon, convertible, and estate, with an appealing front-end restyling. The Herald 13/60 boasted an enlarged 1296 cc engine, offering an impressive 61 bhp, delivering improved performance.

The Triumph Herald production ceased in 1971, alongside the 1200 saloon. The introduction of the Triumph 1300 Saloon marked the end of the Herald era. Despite financial losses due to its labour-intensive construction, the Triumph Herald remained an iconic model for its design and versatility.

Triumph Herald Tire Pressure & Fitment Guides

With advancements in rubber compounds, safety standards, and tire manufacturing methods, concerns have been raised about the accuracy of historic tire pressure recommendations. To address this, we reached out to our contact at Pirelli for insights, and here's what they shared with us.

"Our philosophy is to reproduce as closely as possible the original tyre characteristics using new processes and materials thus to maintain the handling of the vehicle the same. This means, yes we maintain the original handbook pressures.”
