  • Tire pressure for a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia ranges from 16-28 PSI depending on the year and specific model, the type of tires that you decide to fit, and pressure differences for front and rear tires.
  • To find the ideal tire pressures for your car and its tires see our Tire Pressure Guide.

  • The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia originally fitted 560 - 15 crossply tires, the 5.60 x 15 Firestone is our choice of crossply. Later the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia moved onto radials; we offer the 155 HR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 or the 165 HR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67.

  • Recommended Tire pressures for a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

At the bottom of the page we have some Tire Fitment Guides for the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia from Michelin and Dunlop, however the older fitment guides aren't up to date with modern tire compounds and road speeds. Therefore, we have provided our own tire pressure recommendations for contemporary classic tires in the table below. With the increase in carcase structure quality over the years from top manufacturers of tires, you are able to utilise higher pressures. If you put too little pressure into your tires you are likely to have a blowout, hence why we've increased some of these dated tire pressures.

Tire Front Tire Pressure (PSI/BAR) Back Tire Pressure (PSI/BAR)
    5.60-15 Firestone 22 / 1.51 26 / 1.8
    155 HR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 22 / 1.51 27 / 1.86
    165 HR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 22 / 1.51 28 / 1.93

    Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Tires

The Karmann Ghia was initially outfitted with 560 - 15 crossply tires. If a crossply is desired, the 5.60 x 15 Firestone is the finest choice for the Karmann Ghia. If you want to use a radial comparable tyre, the 155-15 Tires will provide the proper light-steering experience. 165-15 tires could be fitted to your Karmann Ghia, they provide the necessary diameter but will make steering feel somewhat heavier.

We think the 155 HR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 or the 165 HR 15 PIRELLI CINTURATO CA67 are the finest handling tires for a Karmann Ghia. Michelin also makes the 155 TR 15 Michelin X and the 165 SR 15 Michelin XZX, which are also excellent value. Furthermore, Michelin manufactures a 165R15 Michelin XZX Whitewall tyre, allowing white wall enthusiasts to not sacrifice the performance of their vehicle for fashion, just have both!

    Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Innertubes

Tube-style wheels were standard on early Karmann Ghia models. Later variants included double hump wheels (which can be run tubeless), although some still retained the regular tube-type wheel. The tubeless wheel was manufactured as late as 1972, and most likely earlier, but we have no strong confirmation of this. If you do fit innertubes, we believe the 15E Michelin is the ideal Karmann Ghia innertube for the tyre sizes mentioned above.

History of the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

The Karmann Ghia was, in its own words, a Volkswagen for people who can't tolerate the sight of a Volkswagen! It was nearly as easily recognised as the famous Beetle itself, and it gained its own cult following. VW's top-of-the-line coupe was hand-built by Karmann in Osnabruck, marrying a reworked beetle floor pan and running gear to beautiful coachwork by Carrozeria Ghia.

The Karmann Ghia was first available as a 2+2 coupe from 1955-1974, and a 2+2 convertible from 1957-1974. The styling was developed by Carrozzeria Ghia in Italy, and the body was hand-crafted by Karmann in Germany. The styling was heavily influenced by Virgil Exner's work, namely his Chrysler d'Elegance and K-310 designs. Unlike the Beetle which was machine welded, the Karmann Ghia's body panels were butt-welded, hand-shaped, and polished with English pewter. This is the primary reason for the price difference between the Karmann Ghia and standard Beetle cars.

The Karmann Ghia, which debuted in 1955 in 1200cc version, kept up with mainstream beetle advances, gaining an all-synchromesh gearbox and ever larger and more powerful engines. In 1957, a cabriolet was introduced, and in 1959, the car's front end received a minor restyle with wider intakes, finned front grilles, and elevated headlights and taillights. From 1967 to 1970, the vehicle was equipped with a 1500cc engine before receiving a 1584cc unit in 1970 and undergoing front and rear restyling.

Bigger taillights with integrated reversing lights and larger wrap-around turn signals were introduced in 1970. Side vision was improved with bigger and broader taillights. Large square-section bumpers replaced the smooth circular originals in 1972, and tail lights were increased once more.

More than 445,000 Karmann Ghia cars were manufactured in Germany during the course of the car's production life, not including Volkswagen Brazil, which produced 41,600 Type 34 cars in Brazil and South America from 1962 to 1975. The Karmann Ghia is known today for its charm and distinctive appearance, making it a must-have for Volkswagen aficionados who have one too many Beetles in their garage.
